Challenging Topics at GCSE

Challenging Topics at GCSE

Challenging Topics at GCSE

Through analysis of what makes a topic ‘challenging’, and how to be effective in teaching one particular topic, teachers will develop an approach that they can use across mathematical areas and key stages. Pupils will develop a deeper, more connected understanding, gaining confidence to tackle a range of challenging questions.

Teachers from different phases will work together in this project to improve communication between Key Stages 2 and 3. Participants will take an aspect of the mathematics curriculum or a pedagogical approach as the focus for their work and develop a consistent approach to it through discussion, joint lesson design and delivery, observation and the development of documentation to support continuity. Work Groups will either select their own focus, or explore multiplicative reasoning.

Who is it for? Secondary and primary school maths teachers, working together to develop a shared understanding of the teaching that gives the best chance of pupils progressing steadily in their mathematical understanding between Years 5 and 8.

What is involved? Four twilight sessions and gap tasks. Teachers will also be expected to arrange a visit to another school to observe a different key-stage and to accommodate a visit at their school.

Intended Outcomes

  • Participant teachers will gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of progression in mathematical learning between years 5 and 8, and, in parallel, a clearer understanding of the teaching approaches and pupil experiences that best serve that purpose, particularly in the ‘other’ school phase.
  • Participant teachers will further their experience and understanding of how representations and structures can be used to help pupils develop sound mathematic understanding.
  • Teachers will develop shared approaches to planning and delivery of the mathematics curriculum across KS2 and KS3
  • Teachers involved in the workgroup will share and disseminate good practice within their own schools and departments.

Secondary TfM Work Groups 2018-19

Work Groups in this project will be led by a secondary Mastery Specialist trained by NCETM/Maths Hubs, with experience of implementing a mastery approach in their own school. Each specialist will work with two mathematics departments in developing practice and systems to support teaching for mastery, as well as facilitating the collaborative professional development of two teachers from each of the schools. These two teachers will become ‘Mastery Advocates’ within their own departments where they will begin to work with their own colleagues to embed mastery principles and practices.
