Early Years Work Groups
The development of mathematical subject knowledge for Early Years practitioners is a key aspect of the work of Maths Hubs. This project will offer two types of Work Groups for EY practitioners: Work Groups to support EY practitioners new to post or with limited experience/training in Early Years maths, focusing on key concepts in EY mathematical development; and Work Groups to develop established practitioners, focusing on the development of research informed practice and starting to develop wider practice.
The Sussex Maths Hub prioritised this area last year. We created a series of videos and resources to be used to support TfM in EY settings.

The focus for Early Years (EY) work has progressed to support practitioners at each stage of their development. In Sussex our current focus for 2019 is for practitioners who are new to EY, or with limited EY maths experience and training. We are currently running a project that explores key concepts in early mathematical development and effective pedagogies that support EY mathematics learning. This project will be run as a local workgroup that will enable participants to review practice, consider current research and develop their leadership capacity.
Who is it for?
Early Years practitioners who are new to EY, or who have limited EY maths experience and training. Practitioners wishing to engage in mathematical EY research.
What is involved?
- 3/4 days of workshops with other practitioners on the programme
- Independent study and setting-based work including gap tasks and evaluation
- Online discussion as part of a professional community
- Support and mentoring from Work Group Lead
Led by Jade Clifford, Experienced Early Years Teacher at Roselands – Stafford Federation, Head of English and Daily Supported Reading, Pashley Phonic Hub Lead
