Overview

Y5-8 Continuity in fractions learning

A seamless transition between primary and secondary school mathematics helps to ensure progress (EEF, 2018) … this project is an opportunity to share and develop best practice cross-phase with a specific focus on fractions learning.  How do we ensure that strong foundations are laid in KS2 and built on effectively in KS3? Join this project to find out! Workshops consist of four 2 hour twilight sessions (4pm – 6.45pm) and a cross-phase visit.

Teachers from different phases will collaborate together in this work group to develop ways to improve the continuum of provision between Key Stages 2 and 3; with a specific focus on consistency in language, representations and expectations in order to build foundations that are shown to improve progression.

Participants in this project will develop a more consistent approach to learning in fractions through discussion, joint lesson design, delivery and observation to support continuity. 

Karen Nanson is leading this Work Group, which will be running at the University of Chichester (Bognor Campus). The meetings will take place across 4 twilights, with inter-session tasks designed to embed the principles and ideas discussed. The dates are:

This opportunity is for up to 14 teachers from Sussex, with ideally one teacher each from a secondary school and an associated feeder school and each having an element of responsibility for an aspect of the mathematics curriculum. Not meeting this criterion will not be a barrier to participation. Participants must however be prepared to model approaches and lead change in their school.
