INTRODUCTORY

This Work Group is open to any Sussex Primary School who has not previously engaged Teaching for Mastery.

Our Teaching for Mastery Introductory Work Groups offer support to schools beginning their journey implementing teaching for mastery with fidelity.
This two-year programme is designed for schools that are new to teaching for mastery and want to build a strong foundation for long-term change.

Participants will work with their school leaders to begin developing and implementing a shared vision for maths, with a focus on improving pupil understanding, promoting positive attitudes and developing consistent, high-quality teaching practices across the school.
CONTINUITY
This Work Group is open to all Sussex primary schools who have previously participated in an Introductory, Development, Embedding or Sustaining Work Group.
Sussex Maths Hub Continuity Work Groups are a perpetual and evolving form of Subject Leader

support where schools focus on continual improvement, consistency, and deeper refinement of Teaching for Mastery approaches.
Our Subject Leader Collaboration Meetings are designed to support schools in embedding and sustaining Teaching for Mastery as part of everyday practice.

Schools are encouraged to open doors, share practices, and work closely with colleagues to overcome barriers to embedding mastery fully.
RECEPTION & KEY STAGE 1

In 2025/26, 15 Maths Hubs (including Sussex) delivering this programme will be involved in an EEF-funded trial to evaluate its impact.

This programme focuses on the key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1.
Lead teachers in participating schools will receive training and will be part of an online community, to share practice and engage in critical reflection.
Teaching materials will be provided for four short sessions each week, aimed at developing children's fluency and flexibility with number.
KEY STAGE 2
Knowledge of multiplication and division and its applications forms the single most important aspect of the KS2 curriculum and is the gateway to success at secondary school.

This project enables pupils in Years 4 & 5 to develop fluency in multiplication and division facts, and a confidence and flexibility with number that exemplifies good number sense

Teaching materials will be provided to cover five short sessions a week, with participants expected to support colleagues in their year groups to use the resources with all Year 4 and 5 classes.

This opportunity is open to all schools participating in Teaching for Mastery Work Groups
